EDUCATION DIGEST

EAST ST. LOUIS SCHOOLS — Principal wins major award: Brittany Green, principal at Wyvetter Younge School of Excellence, won the 2022 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Leadership. Green was one of six finalists among more than 100 Illinois educators nominated for the award, which comes with a $10,000 prize.

The nonprofit Golden Apple Foundation honors principals who have “had a significant and sustained positive impact on the school, created a culture of inclusivity, and delivered dramatic student growth,” according to the school district.

“We are very proud of the hard work and dedication Dr. Green has demonstrated throughout her tenure as principal in East St. Louis School District 189,” said Superintendent Arthur Culver in a statement. “She is an outstanding educational leader because of her commitment to excellence, courage to make difficult decisions, compassion for her students, as well as her strong intellectual capacity. Dr. Green has an outstanding work ethic and consistently goes the extra mile to lead her students to success.”

Green previously led the district’s Gordon Bush Elementary School, which went from one of the lowest performing in the state to receiving a “commendable” designation by the Illinois State Board of Education for increasing test scores and decreasing discipline rates.

This school year, she opened the new kindergarten through 6th grade Wyvetter Younge School, which will add a grade level in each of the next two years to become K-8.

PARKWAY SCHOOLS — New board member appointed:

The Parkway School District’s board of education has chosen Tiffany Mapp Franklin to fill a board vacancy.

After a swearing in scheduled for June 15, Mapp Franklin will serve for 10 months, the duration of the term of board member Kristy Klein Davis. Klein Davis previously announced she will resign in June because she is moving out of state.

The school board seat will be on the district’s April 2023 ballot.

Parkway school board members interviewed 12 candidates for the open position before choosing Mapp Franklin, a Boeing engineer and project manager with teaching experience.

Mapp Franklin will be officially sworn in at the June 15 board of education meeting.
